A positive viewing

“Families often tell me they are unsure about embalming, especially when everything feels overwhelming. What I gently remind them is this: you only have one opportunity to see your loved one again. Embalming is not about changing who they were. It is about preserving them with dignity, so your final memory is peaceful and reassuring.

A viewing can bring comfort that lasts a lifetime. It allows you to remember them as you knew them, not defined by illness or circumstance. In my experience, it is far easier to say ‘I wish I had not’ than to carry the regret of ‘I wish I had’. Embalming gives families the chance to say goodbye in the calmest and most respectful way possible.”

What is a viewing?

A viewing is a private gathering where family members and selected friends spend time with the deceased before the funeral service. Unlike the funeral itself, which is often a larger public event, a viewing offers a more personal and intimate experience.

During a viewing, your deceased loved one’s body rests in an open casket or coffin in a quiet, private setting. You can sit with them, share memories with other mourners, or simply take a private moment to reflect. Some families bring small mementos or favourite belongings to place nearby, whilst others prefer to keep the experience simple and understated.

A viewing can support your grief journey

Viewing the deceased plays a significant role in the grieving process.

Seeing your loved one helps with acceptance. Death can feel unreal, particularly when it is sudden or unexpected. A viewing provides tangible confirmation, helping your mind process what has happened. This moment of reality, whilst difficult, supports healthy grieving and moving forward.

For many people, a viewing offers closure. It provides one final opportunity to be present with the person who has died, to say things unsaid, or simply to sit quietly together. This deeply personal experience can bring comfort during an otherwise overwhelming time.

Cultural and religious beliefs also shape the importance of viewings. Many faith traditions include specific rituals around spending time with the deceased, and our facility accommodates these practices with respect and flexibility.

That said, viewing is a personal choice. There is no correct way to grieve, and we are here to guide you through whichever path brings you peace.

How we prepare your loved one for viewing

Professional preparation ensures that viewing your loved one is a positive experience, creating a lasting memory that brings comfort rather than distress.

When someone dies, the body begins to undergo natural decomposition. Age, illness, and medical treatments all affect how the deceased appears. Our role is to slow these changes and present your loved one in the best possible light.

Embalming is a chemical treatment that sanitises, preserves, and presents the deceased, providing the grieving family with the time they need to gather and say goodbye.

Our embalmers hold certificates recognised by the Australian Institute of Embalming and are members of the British Institute of Embalmers. They follow meticulous standards of care, treating your loved one with the utmost dignity throughout the preparation process.
